The Core Role of Each Ingredient:
Every item in this five-ingredient mixture serves a distinct, functional purpose to mimic commercial formulas:
- Laundry Bar Soap (The Cleaner): This traditional, heavy-duty laundry bar acts as the primary surfactant, lifting surface oils, dirt, and stubborn stains out of fabric weaves.
- Washing Soda and Salt (The Water Softeners): Sodium carbonate significantly raises the water's pH level. This neutralizes mineral hard water, allowing the laundry bar soap to suds slightly and clean fibers effectively without leaving a dull scum.
- Borax (The Cleaning Booster): Sodium borate alters the water chemistry to keep detergent and loose soil suspended in the wash cycle, preventing dirt from settling back onto your clean fabrics.
